
Uruguay bids farewell to former President José Mujica
Montevideo, May 13, 2025 – Uruguay bid farewell with a state funeral to former President José “Pepe” Mujica Cordano, who passed away at the age of 89 after a long illness. Internationally admired for his austere lifestyle, his advocacy for social justice, and his steadfast democratic values, Mujica leaves an indelible mark on the history of the country and the region.
Thousands gathered at Independence Square to pay their respects, while national and international leaders expressed condolences. President Yamandú Orsi led the official ceremony and described Mujica as “an ethical and human symbol of universal dimension.”
